Earth Worms

In the Swiss province, where I live, there are quite a few Earth Worms.

The last couple of years we did some research about how and where they live and what keeps them busy etc.

And we found a lot of answers!

In February Earth Worm mothers lay their egg(s), one or two, in a  small hole, that they dig and fill up with leaves. After that they cover the eggs,  which are more like 2 cm soft rubbery white balls, with more leaves and dirt. On top, always a small opening for oxygen. See photo left. Then the mothers leave and go on with their lifes.

 A Earthworms nest

After 6 months it's around 4 to 5 cm. And at this time they have eaten away their ''egg'' shell. It takes at least another 6 to 7 months when they have a size around 18-20 cm. During this time they slowly eat the bottom of the nest away

With 17 months, When their around 28 cm they leave the nest.

Earthworm +/-11 months old 18 cm

In December 2013 we were very excited because we've spotted another Earthworm. But this time the worm had 10 fingers! normally they just have 8 fingers, so this was a new mutation!

Earthworm,

Latin name: Humus Lumbricus

Are toothless monsters, with 2 arms and 2 hands with

each 4 fingers.

Big black eyes, they can see during the day but much better when it's dark. They are night active.

No legs but a tail, which they use for pushing themselves further while ''walking'' with the hands

On their back they have a armoured shell

that protects them. For example: against other monsters, animals or bad weather conditions

They feed themselves with fruits, nuts and small animals like mice, birds, beetles etc
